Lovelocked

by Deon Reynolds

I've been lost in the the Great Basin on several occasions. I was never worried or fearful. I just didn't know exactly where I was. I don't carry a global positioning satellite device, just some maps and a compass. On this particular trip I was traversing the Buena Vista Valley south out of Unionville, headed to the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge near Fallon. Somewhere along the line I got off my intended route, but I didn't have any problem finding the refuge the next day. Being lost really isn't that bad. You never know what your going to find out there. I would have never found this sign post, or that lovely camping spot along the way, all being lost.

I shoot these black and white panoramas with a disposable Kodak panorama camera. The first thing I do is tear off the cardboard cover, pry open the camera, and pull out the color print film. Using a fine file I distort the frame inside. Then I load it with Tri-X black and white film (or sometimes, as in this photograph, T-Max 3200, which is a grainier film). Some of my disposables have had over a hundred rolls of film through them.
