Success Summit is just east of Ely, in the Schell
Creek Range. This is a place I did not intend
to go to. I had places be, things to do. We were
on our way south to explore three state parks
along Nevada's eastern border. I had attempted
to visit these parks on numerous occasions, but
things just didn't work out. Our second camp of
this trip just happened to be at East Creek, a
forest service campground at the northern approach
to Success Summit. Trish really wanted to go over
Success Summit. Neither one of us had ever heard
of it, we just saw it on the map. Trish's desire
was driven by virtue of its name.
The
next morning we were meandering our way up Success
Summit. This photograph was shot just a few miles
short of the summit, in one of the numerous Aspen
groves which can be found at these elevations.
I didn't quite make it to the parks I was intending
to reach, but I do intend to return to Success
Summit.
I
shoot these black and white panoramas with a disposable
Kodak panorama camera. The first thing I do is
tear off the cardboard cover, pry open the camera,
and pull out the color print film. Using a fine
file I distort the frame inside. Then I load it
with Tri-X black and white film. Some of my disposables
have had over a hundred rolls of film through
them.
